Scenes from Maastricht

Maastricht is the oldest fortified city in The Netherlands dating back to a Roman. settlement in 50 B.C. along the Maas River. The name Maastricht comes from the Romans and means "Maas crossing".

It is near the southern most part of The Netherlands fitting in between Germany and Belgium. We first went to the VVV (tourist information center) and got the "Historic Walking Tour" brochure. It's well worth the time. The city is beautiful with its historic buildings. The day we were there, the temperature was in the 40s (F), but we still ate outside at one of the many wonderful cafes. Of course, we kept the hot tea coming!

My friend had a room at the Kasteel Elsloo near Maastricht. The Kasteel was sold out, so I got a room at La Bergere. You can see below that it's quite different from the Holiday Inn in Rotterdam.
